Refugees - Between Landscape and Territory

A flag is placed in the foreground of a stylized landscape. We are familiar with such imagery from nineteenth-century patriotic and nationalistic depictions. From the perspective of people forced to flee, the concept of ‘landscape’ shifts to that of ‘territory’. The flag marks out the territory in question and effects a change: potential interest in a landscape is no longer concerned with nature as an aesthetic experience, but with administrative and legal issues.
